Spencer Hawley, CIC, LUTCF
Born in Armour SD, Spencer graduated from Brookings High School and South Dakota State University as a political science and economics major.
After college graduation he lived in Louisville KY and Minneapolis MN. In 1977 Spencer joined his father, Wayne Hawley in the Jim Long & Associates Agency of Brookings and Huron SD. Spencer went on to buy the Brookings agency in 1989 and has had a very successful career and company leader in life, health and property casualty insurance. He is the owner of Hawley Insurance Services at 100 Main Avenue in Brookings.
He is currently serving on the Brookings City Board of Appeals and has been since 1986. Spencer was appointed by Governor Rounds to the SD Game, Fish and Parks Commission in 2003 and was re-appointed in April 2006. He served as the Chairman for the Game Fish and Parks Commission for 2 years till his term was up in March 2010.
Spencer Hawley is a member of Brookings-NAIFA Region since 1979 and has held all offices and served as President.. He was also a past recipient of the Gilbert T. Gilbertson Agent of the Year award for the Brookings Association and in 2009 received the Edward Downs Memorial award as agent of the year in South Dakota from the SD National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors.
Hawley is also Colonel (RET) Spencer Hawley, and is retired from the military after serving 30 years with the South Dakota Army National Guard. He received his commission from the Military Science Department of South Dakota State University in 1975 and was promoted to Colonel on July 10, 2000.
Hawley’s command positions have included serving as commander of A Battery and Service Battery of the 2nd Battalion of the 147th FA; Commander of 2nd Battalion 147th FA, Commander of 1st Battalion 147th FA, the Deputy Starc Commander of the SD Army National Guard and Commander of the 147th FA Brigade in Sioux Falls, SD.
Hawley’s civic affiliations include Past President of the Brookings Chamber of Commerce, member of the Government Affairs committee, Military Affairs committee, Brookings Advance Foundation board of directors, SD World Affairs Council and past Chairman of the Brookings Economic Development Corporation. He is a member of the American Legion, Military Officer Assoc., Ducks Unlimited, Pheasants Forever and the Brookings and SD Wildlife Federation. He is also a member and past State President of the Independent Insurance Agents of South Dakota and member and past Exalted Ruler of Brookings Elk Lodge. Colonel (RET )Hawley is past President of the National Guard Association of South Dakota.. He is past President of the SDSU Army ROTC West Point of the Plains Association . He is a regional representative for the ESGR committee (Employer Support for the Guards and Reserves).
Spencer is a member of the Ascension Lutheran Church and his interests include flying, hunting, golfing, skiing, snowmobiling, and spending time at the lake.
He and his wife, Barbara Ann, have four children, Ryan, Shari, Jay and Aaron and 4 grandchildren.
